Nolan Arenado’s Attempt to Impress Potential Suitor Falls Short in Exhibition Game Against Yankees

Despite making the three-hour journey to play in an exhibition game against the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado’s hopes of showcasing himself to a potential suitor were not fulfilled. The Yankees are one of the teams that have shown interest in acquiring Arenado through a trade.

“I didn’t come here for that,” Arenado stated in an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Nolan Arenado’s trip to Tampa to play in an exhibition game against the New York Yankees didn’t go as planned. The St. Louis Cardinals third baseman, who is on the trade market, went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts, failing to showcase himself to potential suitors.

Arenado: “I didn’t come here for that.”

Despite being given the option to skip the trip, Arenado chose to make the three-hour drive to see friends and an athletic trainer in the area. He wanted to get three at-bats, which kept him in the game for seven innings, a rarity for a veteran in February.

But Arenado’s timing at the plate wasn’t quite there. He struck out on three pitches, lined out to second, and whiffed on a 1-2 count.

Arenado: “My body is ready for it. I’m ready for nine. My timing at the plate is not.”

The third baseman is on the trade market due to declining production and a hefty contract that will pay him $74 million over the next three seasons. Despite this, he remains confident in his abilities and is determined to improve.
