Ivan Herrera’s Big League Dreams: Catcher Opens Up About Potential MLB Stint with Cardinals

Catcher Ivan Herrera, a rising star in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, has had a taste of the big leagues with some brief stints in MLB. But according to team president John Mozeliak, Herrera could have a real shot at making the big league club after this year’s Spring Training. And Herrera himself is excited about the opportunity.

“They told me that there’s a good chance that I’ll be with the big league club,” Herrera revealed in an interview with David Venn of MLB.com.

A Promising Prospect

At just 20 years old, Herrera has already made a name for himself in the minor leagues. He was signed by the Cardinals as an international free agent in 2016 and has quickly risen through the ranks, impressing coaches and fans alike with his skills behind the plate.

Last season, Herrera played for the Peoria Chiefs, the Cardinals’ Class A affiliate, where he hit .284 with 10 home runs and 47 RBIs in 87 games. He also showed off his defensive prowess, throwing out 36% of attempted base stealers.

A Chance to Shine

With his impressive performance in the minors, it’s no surprise that the Cardinals are considering giving Herrera a shot at the big leagues. And Herrera is ready to seize the opportunity.

“I’m really excited about the possibility of playing in the majors,” he said. “It’s been my dream since I was a kid, and I’m going to work hard to make it a reality.”

Herrera is currently participating in the Cardinals’ Spring Training camp, where he is getting a chance to showcase his skills and make a case for a spot on the big league roster.

A Bright Future Ahead

While nothing is set in stone yet, it’s clear that Herrera has a bright future ahead of him. With his talent and determination, he has all the makings of a successful major league player. And if he does make the big league club this season, it will be a dream come true for the young catcher.  Catcher Ivan Herrera’s Chance to Shine with the St. Louis Cardinals

After some brief stints in the MLB with the St. Louis Cardinals, catcher Ivan Herrera is ready to make his mark on the big league club. President John Mozeliak hinted at the Winter Meetings that Herrera could have a good chance of joining the team after Spring Training this season. And Herrera himself is excited about the opportunity.

“They told me that there’s a good chance that I’ll be with the big league club,” Herrera shared with David Venn of MLB.com. “It’s a big responsibility and I’m thankful for the opportunity. I’ve worked hard and matured as a player.”

A Potential Dynamic Duo

It will be interesting to see how the Cardinals utilize Herrera alongside star catcher Willson Contreras. Last year, Herrera played 13 games with the Cardinals and impressed with a .297 batting average and .409 on-base percentage, according to Fangraphs. While it’s a small sample size, if he can maintain those numbers over a longer period of time, the Cardinals will have a valuable player on their hands.

Herrera also spoke about his relationship with Cardinals legend Yadier Molina, who recently joined the organization as a special assistant in December.

“I feel like he’s played a tremendous role in my career,” Herrera said of Molina, as shared by Venn. “He’s helped me a lot. He gave me good perspective on defense and a lot of advice on receiving, blocking, and how to anticipate the play.”

A Winning Combination

Herrera also gets along well with Contreras, which could make for a formidable catching duo for the Cardinals in the future. If Herrera continues to perform well and Contreras returns to his usual form, the Cardinals will have one of the best catching tandems in baseball in 2024. Keep an eye on Herrera as he continues to develop and make his mark in the MLB.
