Cardinals Suffer Double Loss: Game and Catcher Willson Contreras
In a devastating blow, the St. Louis Cardinals not only lost their game against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night, but also their catcher, Willson Contreras, to a broken finger. The Twins dominated the game with a 6-0 victory, fueled by two home runs from Trevor Larnach off Cardinals’ starting pitcher Sonny Gray. Matt Wallner added a third home run for Minnesota, a 430-foot shot off Cardinals reliever Kyle Leahy.
The unfortunate incident occurred in the 4th inning when Contreras was hit in the right hand by a pitch from the Twins’ Pablo Lopez. The impact resulted in a broken right middle finger for Contreras, who will now be placed on the injured list. With only five weeks left in the Cardinals’ schedule, it seems that Contreras’ season is over.
The loss not only affects the Cardinals’ record, but also their standing in the division and wild card race. They now sit 11 games behind the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers and 6 games behind the Atlanta Braves for the last wild card spot in the National League.
Despite the tough loss, the Cardinals remain determined to push through and finish the season strong. However, the absence of Contreras will undoubtedly be felt on the field.
