After missing time on the injury list for the first time in his career, Robberse has been using this offseason to meticulously go through a “checklist” in preparation for the upcoming season.
Robberse, who was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in a trade deadline deal in 2023, had a solid first full season in the Cardinals system. Now, with a year of experience under his belt and a spot on the 40-man roster secured, Robberse is determined to make a bigger impact in the upcoming season. He has been diligently working through a checklist of tasks to improve his game and ensure he is in top form when the season begins.
With his determination and dedication, Robberse is poised to make a strong comeback and solidify his place as a key player in the Cardinals organization. Fans can’t wait to see what he will bring to the field in 2025.
Cardinals Pitcher Sem Robberse Uses Offseason to Prepare for 2025 Season
In a bullpen session on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, Cardinals pitcher Sem Robberse showed off his skills during spring training in Jupiter, Florida. After missing time on the injury list for the first time in his career last year, the 23-year-old right-hander has been diligently working on a checklist to prepare for the upcoming 2025 season.
One of the items on Robberse’s checklist is to add extra weight in order to increase his strength. He has also made it a priority to stick to a consistent training routine to avoid any potential injuries. Reflecting on his time in Class AAA in 2024, Robberse has been trying to analyze his strategies and determine what worked and what didn’t.
During the Cardinals’ annual Winter Warm-Up event last month at Busch Stadium, Robberse shared his thoughts on the past season, saying, “Trying to figure out how I did things last year. What worked? What didn’t work?”
Acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023, Robberse spent his first full season in the Cardinals system in 2024. He finished the year with a 5-5 record and a 4.38 ERA in 90 innings over 19 games, 17 of which were starts. He also recorded 80 strikeouts, a slight decrease from his previous season with the Blue Jays where he had 130 strikeouts in 124 innings.
Robberse had a strong start to the 2024 season, going 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 29 innings across five starts in April. However, his performance declined in May with an ERA of 4.91 in six games, and he eventually landed on the injured list with an elbow strain in June. He returned to the rotation in September, pitching 12 innings in three starts before the minor league season ended.
Reflecting on his season, Robberse acknowledges that his pitch usage in April had an impact on his performance in May and June. He explains that he wanted to rely on his strengths but wasn’t entirely sure what those were, so he trusted his instincts in attacking hitters. This approach led to a high usage of his cutter, which he plans to adjust in the future.
As he looks ahead to the 2025 season, Robberse is grateful for the opportunity to finish the 2024 season healthy and is determined to continue improving in the offseason. With a better understanding of his strengths and strategies, he is confident in his ability to contribute to the Cardinals’ success in the upcoming season.
