Heat Advisory for Tuesday 8/6 CANCELLED

City Hosts Open House to Discuss Traffic Safety Improvements at Cherokee Recreation Center

The City of St. Louis has cancelled the Heat Advisory for Tuesday, August 6, due to high temperatures. However, the City is still taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of its residents. On Thursday, August 8, from 4 to 7 p.m., the City will be hosting a public open house at the Cherokee Recreation Center (3200 S. Jefferson Ave.) to discuss traffic safety improvements along Jefferson Avenue, from Chouteau Avenue to Chippewa Street.

Mayor Tishaura O. Jones emphasizes the importance of community input in improving traffic safety. She states, “Community feedback played a significant role in updating the Kingshighway designs, and it is crucial to apply the same approach to these plans.”

This open house is part of the $46 million Principal Arterial Traffic Safety Enhancements project, which aims to improve over 30 miles of arterials in the city, including Jefferson, Kingshighway, Grand, and Union. The improvements on Jefferson and Parnell avenues between Chouteau and Natural Bridge avenues are expected to be completed this fall.

In other related news, Mayor Jones recently signed a new Complete Streets Bill, modernizing the City’s policies. The City has also launched a new interactive map and webpage called Friendly Streets, making it easier for residents to access information about transportation infrastructure improvements. Additionally, the Streets Department has issued a request for proposal for an automated camera enforcement system, bringing it closer to a comeback in St. Louis.

For related services, residents can pay parking tickets online, report tree problems or request new trees, report abandoned or derelict cars, and report potholes to the Street Division. The Sewer Lateral Repair Program also covers repairs to sewer lines under the right of way.
