Former Mountaineer JJ Wetherholt Named Top Prospect for St. Louis Cardinals

MLB.com has released their updated Top 100 Baseball Prospects list, and West Virginia University alum JJ Wetherholt has claimed the top spot for the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization.

Wetherholt, who was drafted seventh overall in this year’s MLB Draft after a successful three seasons at WVU, has already made an impact in the minor leagues. In 11 games with the single-A affiliate, the Palm Beach Cardinals, he has recorded nine hits, one home run, and six RBIs in 34 at-bats.

But Wetherholt’s talent extends beyond just his own organization. He also ranks as the No. 19 overall prospect in all of baseball and is the fourth-ranked prospect from this year’s draft class.

While he currently plays shortstop in the minor leagues, it is uncertain if that will be his long-term position. However, his impressive performance has already earned him a $6.9 million signing bonus from the Cardinals.

Another former Mountaineer, Victor Scott II, is also making waves in the Cardinals’ organization. He is currently on the major league club and is listed as their No. 5 overall prospect.
