Mayor Jones Calls for Proposals from Certified Public Accountants to Audit St. Louis School Board Finances

Parents and Students Deserve Financial Accountability from School Board, Says Mayor Jones

Today, Mayor Tishaura O. Jones’ administration has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) seeking proposals from Certified Public Accountants to conduct an audit of the Board of Education of the City of St. Louis. This move comes as a response to the mismanagement of the school board, which has had a negative impact on the education and future of the city’s children.

“Our parents and families deserve answers,” stated Mayor Jones. “The children of St. Louis and the future of our city are suffering due to mismanagement. Parents and students in St. Louis deserve a school board that is held to the highest standard of financial accountability.”

According to state law (Section 165.181, RSMo), the Mayor is required to appoint an auditor at the end of each fiscal school year. The school district is also responsible for covering the cost of this auditor. The RFP specifies a three-year audit period, beginning with the 2023-2024 fiscal year and ending on June 30, 2024.

Recent budget documents from the district show a concerning trend, with the general operating budget going from a $17 million surplus to a projected $35 million deficit in just one year.

The deadline for submitting a proposal to the Mayor’s Office is August 30, 2024. Interested vendors can find more details and submission guidelines on the City’s website. The RFP can also be found on the website.
