MLB Network’s highly anticipated positional rankings for the 2024 season came to a thrilling conclusion on Tuesday night as they revealed their top relief pitchers. And it’s no surprise that the talented Mets closer, Edwin Diaz, secured a spot on the list.  MLB Network Reveals Top Relief Pitchers for 2024 Season, Mets’ Edwin Diaz Makes the List at #6

On Tuesday night, MLB Network unveiled their final positional rankings for the 2024 season, focusing on relief pitchers. As expected, Mets’ star closer Edwin Diaz secured a spot on the list at #6. However, he was edged out by five other talented pitchers, including Minnesota’s Jhoan Duran, Dodgers’ Evan Phillips, Tampa Bay’s Pete Fairbanks, St. Louis Cardinals’ Ryan Helsley, and Houston’s newly signed shutdown closer Josh Hader.

Diaz’s Return to the Closer Role

After missing the entire 2023 season due to a knee injury sustained while celebrating a Team Puerto Rico win at the WBC, Diaz is set to make his return to the closer role for the Mets this year. According to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, the right-hander is recovering well and is expected to handle a full workload during spring training, which is just two weeks away.

Diaz Leads a Strong Bullpen

Diaz will serve as the anchor for a bullpen that also includes Adam Ottavino, Brooks Raley, Jorge Lopez, Drew Smith, and potentially lefty Jake Diekman, along with two others. If the Mets hope to bounce back from a disappointing 2023 season and contend for a championship, they will need Diaz to continue his dominant form from the last time he took the mound.

Diaz’s Impressive Stats

In 2022, Diaz received National League Cy Young and MVP votes after converting 32-of-35 save opportunities, posting a 1.31 ERA and 0.83 WHIP, and striking out an impressive 50.2 percent of the batters he faced (118 in 60.2 IP). With numbers like these, it’s no surprise that he made the list of top relief pitchers for the 2024 season.

Don’t Miss Diaz’s Return to the Mound

As the 2024 season approaches, all eyes will be on Diaz as he makes his highly anticipated return to the mound. With his impressive track record and the support of a strong bullpen behind him, he is sure to make a big impact for the Mets this year. Don’t miss out on seeing him in action.
