After a two-year hiatus, Mike Shildt is back in the dugout as the new manager of the San Diego Padres. The team announced on Tuesday that Shildt has been given a two-year contract, marking his return to the field after being abruptly fired by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2021.
Shildt, who was voted NL Manager of the Year in 2019 while with the Cardinals, takes over a Padres team that had a disappointing season in 2023. Despite a strong showing in the previous year’s playoffs, the team failed to live up to expectations and ended up with a record of 79-83. However, with a star-studded roster including players like Fernando Tatis Jr., Juan Soto, Manny Machado, and Xander Bogaerts, Shildt has the potential to lead the team to success.

Shildt is the third manager in four seasons for the Padres and the fifth full-time manager under general manager A.J. Preller since 2015. Despite Preller’s efforts to build a winning team, the Padres have yet to win a division title. Bob Melvin, the previous manager, was the only one to lead the team to consecutive winning seasons under Preller.
Although Preller and Melvin had initially planned to work together next season, Melvin’s hometown team, the San Francisco Giants, offered him a job and the Padres granted permission for him to interview. Melvin was hired soon after, leaving the Padres in need of a new manager.
Shildt’s journey with the Cardinals began in 2003 when he joined the team as a scout. He then moved on to player development and worked his way up through the minor league system. In August 2018, he was named interim manager and was later given the permanent job for the following season. Under his leadership, the Cardinals won 91 games and made it to the NL Championship Series before being swept by the Nationals.
In 2021, the Cardinals had a franchise-record 17-game winning streak and made it to the wild-card game, but ultimately lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers on a walk-off homer. A week later, Shildt was fired due to “philosophical differences” between himself, the coaching staff, and the front office, according to Cardinals president John Mozeliak.
