ST. LOUIS, MO – In a thrilling Game 1 of the Calder Cup Finals, Springfield Thunderbirds’ defenseman Matt Kessel scored the game-winning goal in overtime against the Chicago Wolves in Chicago. The goal secured a crucial victory for the Thunderbirds and set the tone for the rest of the series.

The game was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams, with both sides putting up a strong fight. However, it was Kessel’s clutch performance in the extra period that ultimately sealed the deal for the Thunderbirds.

Kessel, who has been a key player for the Thunderbirds throughout the season, has also made an impact for the St. Louis Blues. The team’s president of hockey operations and general manager, Doug Armstrong, announced on Monday that Kessel has been assigned to the Blues’ AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds.

In his 27 games with the Blues this season, Kessel has recorded three assists and 10 penalty minutes. He has also been a force on the ice for the Thunderbirds, tallying 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and 19 penalty minutes in just 17 appearances.
