Mets’ Mark Vientos Returns to Lineup After Groin Discomfort

New York Mets’ third baseman Mark Vientos made his return to the lineup on Tuesday night against the Philadelphia Phillies after missing two games due to groin discomfort. Vientos, who left Saturday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals in the fifth inning after making a leaping catch, was back in the cleanup spot in the batting order for the first-place Mets.

With the Mets facing Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sánchez in the middle game of their series, Vientos’ return was a much-needed boost for the team. The 25-year-old had been struggling at the plate, hitting .167 with two home runs and six RBIs this season. However, he made an immediate impact in his return, hitting a two-out RBI double in the first inning and making a difficult defensive play in the second to save at least one run.

Vientos had a breakout season in 2024, hitting .266 with 27 homers, 71 RBIs, and an .837 OPS. He also set a Mets postseason record with 14 RBIs as the team reached the National League Championship Series. His return to the lineup is a welcome sight for the Mets as they continue their winning streak.

Left fielder Brandon Nimmo was rested for the game against the left-handed pitcher, with the Mets in the midst of a 13-game stretch without an off day. José Azócar started in Nimmo’s place and batted ninth.
