“Yankees’ Spring Training Looms: Roster Holes Still Need Filling”

As the countdown to spring training begins, the New York Yankees are facing the challenge of filling some key positions on their roster. Despite securing lefty specialist Tim Hill with a $3 million deal, the team’s biggest need remains in the infield, specifically at third base. With the departure of former second baseman Gleyber Torres to Detroit, the Yankees are looking to shift Jazz Chisholm to the hot corner after his successful stint there in the latter half of the 2024 season.

Spring Training Approaching: New York Yankees Still Have Holes to Fill, Including Third Base Position

With spring training just weeks away, the New York Yankees are gearing up to make some final roster moves. While they have already re-signed lefty specialist Tim Hill, there is still work to be done, especially when it comes to improving their infield depth.

The biggest need for the Yankees is at third base, after former second baseman Gleyber Torres was traded to the Detroit Tigers. It is expected that Jazz Chisholm will move to third base, after spending the second half of the 2024 season playing in that position. However, there are still several players vying for the spot, including DJ LeMahieu, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Oswald Peraza.

But there is also the possibility of a blockbuster trade for St. Louis Cardinals star Nolan Arenado. While previous talks seemed to have died down, there are reports that the two teams have reengaged in discussions about a potential deal. According to John Denton of MLB.com, the talks are centered around “restructured deals.”

However, there are some obstacles in the way of a potential trade. Not only would Arenado have to waive his full no-trade clause to come to the Yankees, but the financial aspect of the deal may also be a challenge. The Yankees are hoping to stay under the $301 million luxury tax threshold, and Arenado’s contract may not fit into their budget.

According to Denton, the financial aspect of the deal is the biggest hold-up for any team interested in Arenado. The Cardinals are reportedly not willing to pay as much as $20 million towards the remaining balance of his contract, which could be a deal-breaker.

Despite his declining numbers in the last two seasons, Arenado is still considered an elite third baseman, known for his exceptional defense. However, his offensive production has decreased since his standout 2022 season. But with the Yankees in need of a solid third baseman, he could still be a valuable addition to the team.

In other New York Yankees news, there are rumors swirling about a potential free-agent signing. The Yankees are projected to land a polarizing slugger, who could provide a boost to their lineup. Additionally, there is speculation that the Yankees could be a future landing spot for a superstar with a massive $450 million price tag. And to fill their biggest need, the Yankees may turn to a former $70 million star free agent.
