Roman Bürki has been recognized as the 2023 MLS Allstate Goalkeeper of the Year for his pivotal role in the unprecedented inaugural season success of St. Louis CITY SC.

Previously a Swiss national team player and a key figure at Borussia Dortmund, Bürki is the inaugural individual from an expansion team to secure this accolade since Zach Thornton’s achievement with Chicago Fire FC in 1998. This also marks the first time a St. Louis CITY SC player has received an MLS Year-End Award.

Noteworthy achievements for Bürki are as follows:

17 wins are the most by any goalkeeper during their first MLS season (post-shootout era).

42 goals conceded are the fewest of any goalkeeper to play at least 30 games for an expansion club in a 34-game season.

One of three goalkeepers to record over 100 saves in MLS (123) this season.

123 saves on the year are the second-most among all goalkeepers in MLS.

Save percentage (74.55%) is fourth-highest among active MLS goalkeepers to play in at least 20 games this season.

First goalkeeper to produce at least 120 saves and eight clean sheets in a season since Vito Mannone in 2019.

The Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award for the best goalkeeper of the regular 2023 season was determined through votes from MLS club technical staff, media, and active MLS players. Here’s a detailed look at the voting outcomes, which show Roman Celentano of FC Cincinnati and Pedro Gallese of Orlando City SC in a tie for the runner-up position.

St. Louis, MO – Pietrangelo, who has 51 goals and 255 points in 459 games, finished fourth in the Norris Trophy (NHL’s best defenseman) voting in 2011-12 and he’s received All-Star votes in each of the last five seasons.

He has been among the top 11 in the league in ice time in the same stretch, ranking No. 6 last season at 26 minutes, 18 seconds per game.

Pietrangelo has four years remaining on a seven-year, $45.5 million contract he signed in 2013. His annual average value of $6.5 million ranks second on the team behind forward Vladimir Tarasenko ($7.5 million).

Pietrangelo will become the 10th Blues defenseman to wear the “C,” following Eric Brewer, Al MacInnis, Chris Pronger, Garth Butcher, Scott Stevens, Barry Gibbs, Barclay Plager, Bob Plager and Al Arbour.

Many remember when St. Louis was a two-bird city. We had the St. Louis Cardinals, and the St. Louis Cardinals (one baseball, and one football).

So what is the story behind our first NFL team?

Chicago Cardinals owner Violet Bidwill had married St. Louis businessman Walter Wolfner in 1949, two years after inheriting the team from her late first husband, Charles Bidwill. When it became obvious that the Cardinals could no longer hope to compete with the Chicago Bears, a move to St. Louis seemed to make sense.

The NFL conducted a survey of St. Louis and concluded that it was capable of supporting a team. The league’s 12 owners unanimously approved the move, ending their 62-year stay in Chicago. During the Cardinals’ stay in St. Louis, two major Cardinal teams (football and baseball) called the city home. Sports fans and local news broadcasters called them “the football Cardinals” or “the baseball Cardinals” to distinguish the two. To avoid confusion, the NFL contemplated changing the Cardinals’ name, but then dropped the idea (though in the early years of the NFL, numerous teams were intentionally named after local baseball teams, directly or indirectly). They shared Sportsman’s Park with the baseball team. However, St. Louis hadn’t had a pro football team since the early days of the NFL, and tickets were difficult to sell. The Cardinals initially held practices in the city park. Their first home game was a loss to the Giants on October 2, 1960, and they finished the year at 6-5-1. In 1961, they broke even at 7-7 (the NFL had expanded to a 14-game season to compete with the upstart AFL) and fell to 4-9-1 in 1962. Improving to 9-5 in 1963, the Cardinals almost reached the playoffs, but a loss to the Giants prevented that.

During the Cardinals’ 28-year stay in St. Louis, they advanced to the playoffs just three times (1974, 1975 & 1982), never hosting or winning in any appearance. In spite of what was considered lackluster performance in St. Louis, their overall record there, of 187 wins, 202 losses, and 13 ties (.481 winning percentage) is easily the highest winning percentage for any of the three locations that the Cardinals have been associated with.

In 1995, the Rams moved from Anaheim to St. Louis, where they have played since

The post The OTHER St. Louis Cardinals first appeared on STL Homelife.

NEW YORK (FOX)-Former St. Louis Cardinals player and manager, Joe Torre, started a foundation 13 years ago aimed at raising awareness and helping to end the cycle of domestic violence. Torre’s mother was abused by his father. On Thursday, he hosted his annual golf and tennis classic at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club with dozens of VIPs to raise awareness and funds for his Safe At Home Foundation.

The foundation’s school-based ‘Margaret’s Place’ program helps middle and high schoolers affected by domestic violence have a safe room to talk about it. Torre says the most important thing his organization does is let youngsters know that it’s not their fault and they’re not alone.

The final vote contest is on, Cardinals fans. Carlos Martinez is one of the National League candidates to get the last spot on the roster for the NL squad. He goes up against Clayton Kershaw, Johnny Cueto, Troy Tulowitzki and Jeurys Familia.

The Cards have even joined forces with the Kansas City Royals to help get Martinez and Mike Moustakas into the midsummer classic, and incentivized the voting with a chance to win to box seat tickets.

St. Louis, MO – NBC Sports – Until they find someone to buy the naming rights to the new proposed St. Louis NFL stadium, maybe they should refer to it as the Hot Potato.

A lawsuit challenging the St. Louis ordinance requiring a public vote prior to the use of tax dollars on a sports stadium has been through two judges this week, as explained by David Hunn of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The first to go was David Dowd, who removed himself from the case on Monday. Dowd is ill and unable to handle the case in a timely way; the presiding judge of the St. Louis Circuit Court, Bryan Hettenbach, insisted that Dowd wasn’t simply trying to sidestep a case that could ultimately make him unpopular with Rams fans, if outcome results in a popular vote that prevents the stadium from being built. Regardless of the power of the NFL, electorates currently don’t have the desire to subsidize some of the richest people on the planet.

The case was next assigned to Circuit Judge Joan Moriarty, but the attorneys for the Edward Jones Dome authority (the group challenging the 13-year-old ordinance) exercised their right to strike one judge from the case. The decision to remove Moriarty means that based either on her politics or her past rulings the lawyers representing the Edward Jones Dome authority believed she would conclude that a public vote is required.

So now Judge Thomas J. Frawley, who primarily handles family law issues, has gotten the case. His background doesn’t necessarily fit this dispute. Because he’s now presiding over a lawsuit that could result in a divorce between the Rams and St. Louis, maybe it does.

Regardless of the outcome of the case, the clock is ticking. The powers-that-be in St. Louis need to secure a final order overturning the ordinance in order to clear the way for a stadium proposal that would be deemed sufficiently strong by the NFL to persuade enough owners to prevent Stan Kroenke from moving the Rams to L.A.

On Tuesday, the Rams signed Missouri product and 2015 NFL Draft sixth-round pick WR Bud Sasser.

It was a bit of a strange move as the Rams, per custom under head coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead, have opted to sign their draft picks in unison. Well today, we found out why.

It’s a cold world sometimes. Here’s hoping Sasser is able to have it cleared and either make it with another team or move on from football.

On the other side, props to the Rams for doing the classy thing. By signing him to his rookie four-year deal, Sasser gets medical coverage to help him treat the condition. As much as we follow sports for the sports, it’s always heartening for your team to do something as charitable as this.

Sasser will pick up a signing bonus just less than $135k.

Best of luck, Bud.

The post Bud Sasser Dropped From St. Louis Rams first appeared on STL Homelife.
