LATEST NEWS

July 15: Cardinals recall RHP James Naile as the 27th player for Saturday’s split doubleheaderNaile, 30, was called up to the Cardinals on Saturday as the 27th allowable player for a doubleheader. Naile grew up in Southeast Missouri as a Cardinals fan.

This season with the Cards, Naile has appeared in five games. He has an 11.74 ERA over 7 2/3 innings pitched. He made his MLB debut and appeared in seven games with the Cardinals in 2022.

July 15: Adam Wainwright (right shoulder strain) to begin throwing program off a mound on TuesdayWainwright, who needs two wins to become just the third Cardinals pitcher in franchise history with 200 victories, said on Saturday that he will throw off a mound on Tuesday as he continues to progress toward a return to the team.

Wainwright, 41, was placed on the injured list on July 5, one day after being hit hard by the Marlins in a lopsided loss. He said he received cortisone shots in his ailing right shoulder and in his back, which has bothered him since Spring Training. Wainwright said the pain and lack of mobility in his shoulder have played roles in him being unable to effectively finish his pitches.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Wainwright will be expected to return as a starter even though he has struggled in that role much of the season. Wainwright, who announced that this will be his final MLB season, missed the first five weeks of the season with a groin strain, and he has gone 3-4 with a 7.66 ERA in 11 starts.

July 14: LHP Jordan Montgomery (right hamstring) will avoid the injured list and make his next start TuesdayMontgomery, who left his last start with right hamstring irritation, healed sufficiently enough over the All-Star break that he will be able to avoid a stint on the IL and will make his next start Tuesday against the Marlins, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said.

Montgomery, the Cardinals’ most consistent pitcher this season, grabbed at his hamstring midway through a start against the White Sox on July 7. He had to leave the game after 4 1/3 innings — a start where he surrendered just three hits, one walk and one run.

Marmol said the Cardinals pushed Montgomery’s next start to Tuesday to try and give his nagging hamstring injury extra rest. The Cardinals will use their bullpen to handle Monday’s series opener against the Marlins, a team that took three of four against the Cardinals last week in Miami.

On the season, Montgomery is 6-7 with a 3.23 ERA. Prior to injuring his hamstring against the White Sox, Montgomery was 4-0 in his previous five starts.

July 14: INF/OF Tommy Edman (right wrist inflammation) gets pain-killing injection in his wristStill bothered by pain in his troublesome right wrist, Edman received an injection earlier in the week and is expected to miss “several more days,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said.

The Cardinals were hopeful that Edman would be able to return after the All-Star break, but those plans were shelved when the pain in his right wrist lingered. Edman, who said the pain started last week when he was taking batting practice and moved to different spots in his wrist, was put on the 10-day injured list July 7.

Edman, a Gold Glove second baseman in 2021, has filled the role of utility ace for the Cardinals this season, playing 29 games at second base, 29 games at shortstop, 27 games in center field and eight games in right field. He is hitting .237 with seven home runs, 15 doubles and three triples with 29 RBIs. He leads the team in stolen bases with 14 while getting caught stealing just once.

10-day and 15-day IL

RHP Adam Wainwright (right shoulder strain)Expected return: TBDWainwright, who landed on the injured list on July 5, said he will begin a throwing program off the mound on July 18. He received an injection in his shoulder, and the hope is that the injection will help with the veteran’s recovery. The right-hander gave up 20 earned runs across eight innings in his last three stars (19.1 ERA) before landing on the IL. He owns a 7.66 ERA and 1.994 WHIP across 51 2/3 innings this season. CF Tommy Edman (right wrist inflammation)Expected return: TBDEdman landed on the 10-day injured list on July 7. On July 14, manager Oliver Marmol said Edman is expected to miss “several more days” after receiving an injection earlier in the week. The Cardinals’ utility specialist appeared as a defensive replacement on July 5 and 6 but didn’t get any plate appearances due to the wrist injury. There was no structural damage on his wrist. He’s first eligible to come off the IL on July 17 against the Marlins. Edman is hitting .237 with seven homers and 29 RBIs this season. (Last updated: July 14)

RHP Drew VerHagen (right hip impingement)Expected return: TBDVerHagen was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 2 with a hip injury that he says has been bothering him for “three weeks.” VerHagen, who was signed to a two-year, free-agent deal prior to the 2022 season, missed most of that year after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. He said he received a cortisone shot in his hip and won’t resume baseball activities for a few days. (Last updated: July 2)

RHP Jake Woodford (right shoulder strain)Expected return: TBDWoodford was placed on the 15-day IL on June 30 due to pain in his throwing shoulder. He felt discomfort late Thursday night after he allowed four earned runs on four hits, two walks and a long home run to Astros slugger Kyle Tucker in 2 1/3 innings pitched. It is the second time this season that the 26-year-old Woodford has been placed on the IL with right shoulder irritation. (Last updated: June 30)

RHP Ryan Helsley (right forearm strain)Expected return: TBDHelsley was hoping to get the OK from his doctor to resume baseball activities the week of June 26, but he anticipates his return is still weeks away.

Helsley said the injury, sustained on June 11 while playing catch before a game against the Reds, was the same injury he suffered in 2018.

“I think in ’18, I tried to rush back too quick and dealt with it for 2 1/2 months, you know, and ultimately made one start and got shut down the rest of the year,” Helsley said. “I decided this time it was more important to come back healthy, you know, whatever point that is during the season, instead of try to throw in a week and maybe get shut down again and have to restart the process all over again.”

Helsley anticipates needing two to three weeks of a buildup followed by a rehab assignment before returning. (Last updated: June 27)

INF Jose Fermin (quad strain)Expected return: Several weeks at the earliestFermin, who has a spot on the 40-man roster and was acquired this offseason in a trade with the Guardians, is expected to miss multiple weeks with a quad strain.

When asked if the injury was deemed significant, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said, “Yeah, I would say so. Running down to first [on March 4], when he came out of the game, he strained his quad. I don’t want to put a timetable on it, but when we all hear the word ‘strain,’ we all know what that means.” (Last updated: March 6)

60-day IL

OF Tyler O’Neill (lower back strain)Expected return: TBDO’Neill began a rehab assignment on July 4 and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in five innings. After appearing for the first time in center field on July 7 — and going 1-for-2 with one walk in five innings — the slugging outfielder has now appeared in four games with Triple-A Memphis. He has gone 2-for-10 with three walks and four strikeouts.

O’Neill has been on the injured list with a lower back strain since May 5. His rehab progression is a positive sign for a potential return soon. The outfielder is hitting .228 with two home runs and six RBIs in 29 games this season. (Last updated: July 9)

LHP Packy Naughton (left forearm strain)Expected return: 2024Naughton was forced to leave the April 7 loss to the Brewers in the eighth inning with numbness in his left arm. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said on June 19 that Naughton would undergo surgery on June 26, sidelining the left-hander for the remainder of 2023. (Last updated: June 19)

RHP Wilking Rodriguez (right shoulder pain)Expected return: 2024Rodriguez, a Rule 5 Draft selection from the Yankees who was supposed to contend for a spot in the Cardinals’ bullpen, had season-ending surgery on his right shoulder on May 3, Cards manager Oliver Marmol said. The 33-year-old Rodriguez isn’t expected to be able to resume throwing for 4-to-6 months following the arthroscopic procedure.

Rodriguez appeared in seven Spring Training games, but he opened the regular season on the injured list because of recurring shoulder pain. He made three appearances with Triple-A Memphis, but pain eventually returned in his shoulder. (Last updated: May 3)
