24-Year-Old Drew Gilbert Hits Monster First MLB Home Run for San Francisco Giants
On Sunday, 24-year-old Drew Gilbert, a prospect for the San Francisco Giants, had a day to remember. After a slow start to his career, the lefthander, who played college baseball at the University of Tennessee, finally broke out with two hits, including a monster home run to right field. This solo homerun helped the Giants secure a 7-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, snapping their seven-game losing streak.
Gilbert’s first 10 at-bats in the MLB were hitless, but he made up for it with his impressive performance on Sunday. He also drove in a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, solidifying his breakout game.
The win for the Giants brings their record to 60-64 for the season, but they are still out of the race for both the National League West and the wildcard. On the other hand, the Rays, who had a three-game winning streak, now have a record of 61-64 for the season.
The Rays will have a break on Tuesday before hosting the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals next week. Meanwhile, the Giants will continue their winning streak on the road with a four-game series against the San Diego Padres, followed by a weekend series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
In other MLB news, the Chicago Cubs picked up their first game in the standings since July 30, the Chicago White Sox welcomed slugging prospect Owen Caissie for his MLB debut, and the St. Louis Cardinals had a disastrous game on Wednesday. Additionally, Colson Montgomery joined elite company with the White Sox on Monday, and the Los Angeles Angels continued their impressive performance with a win over the Dodgers.
