The Cubs Eyeing Trade for Former Cardinals Pitcher to Boost Rotation

With less than three weeks until the July 31 trade deadline, the NL Central-leading Cubs are making moves to solidify their chances of a deep postseason run. And at the top of their list for potential trades? A former Cardinals homegrown hurler.

According to Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly, the Cubs have their sights set on Sandy Alcantara, who was traded from the Cardinals to the Miami Marlins in 2017 alongside frontline starter Zac Gallen. Despite Gallen’s struggles this season, Alcantara’s performance has been even worse, with a dismal 7.22 ERA.

In his eighth year in the league, Alcantara has a 4-9 record and a 71-to-37 strikeout-to-walk ratio, along with a .271 batting average against and a 1.48 WHIP in 91 innings pitched. While his numbers may not be impressive, the Cubs are hoping to tap into his potential and add depth to their rotation.
