Hawaii Baseball Players Shine in MLB Draft: Aiva Arquette and Wehiwa Aloy Lead the Way

The 2021 Major League Baseball Draft has been a standout year for Hawaii’s talented baseball players. Two of the state’s top prospects, Aiva Arquette and Wehiwa Aloy, were quickly snatched up on the first day of the draft. But they weren’t the only ones making waves.

In a back-to-back call in the 6th round, St. Louis star Bruin Agbayani and University of Hawaii outfielder Matt Miura were both selected. The excitement didn’t stop there, as Hawaii News Now caught up with Miura on Monday morning to hear about his once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Miura, who has been playing baseball since he was a child, expressed his gratitude for being drafted and his excitement for the future. He also shared his appreciation for the support he has received from his family, coaches, and teammates throughout his baseball journey.

The 2025 Major League Baseball Draft has been a standout year for Hawaii’s top baseball players. Aiva Arquette and Wehiwa Aloy were quickly picked on the first day, while Bruin Agbayani and Matt Miura were selected back-to-back in the sixth round.

Miura Receives Call of a Lifetime

caught up with Matt Miura, a University of Hawaii outfielder and Maryknoll alum, after he was drafted 180th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals. Miura’s mother was ecstatic upon receiving the news, and Miura himself was overjoyed. He credits his recent stint in the premier Cape Cod League for catching the attention of the Cardinals.

Local Athletes Make Their Mark

Miura’s selection is just one of many for Hawaii’s talented athletes in this year’s draft. Aiva Arquette was drafted seventh overall by the Miami Marlins, making her one of the highest drafted Hawaii-born players. Wehiwa Aloy was picked by the Baltimore Orioles at the 31st pick, and Bruin Agbayani was selected by the Minnesota Twins at 179th overall. Miura believes this is a testament to the state’s strong baseball talent and their determination to succeed.

Proving Hawaii’s Grit and Determination

Miura reflects on his journey and the hard work it took to get to this point. He believes that Hawaii baseball has a “dirty in the mud mentality” and is willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.
