Sherman also revealed that the Yankees are still prioritizing pitching upgrades before the deadline and didn’t give up any of their top trade assets in this deal. They also believe that a change of scenery could lead to improved numbers for McMahon.
“The Yankees clearly are banking that leaving a losing environment in which McMahon had no protection for a deeper lineup, the right field porch, plus his strong defense will net a strong performance,” Sherman wrote.
With a six-year, $70 million contract, the Yankees are taking a risk on McMahon, but it could pay off in a big way for the team. Only time will tell if this trade was a win for the Yankees or a mistake.
