St. Louis Cardinals Rumored to Make Big Moves Before Trade Deadline

The trade deadline is fast approaching and the St. Louis Cardinals are at the center of speculation. With just a few days left until July 31, two key players on the team could potentially be on the move.

One of the biggest names being thrown around in trade talks is Cardinals star Nolan Arenado. But now, there’s another player being added to the mix – pitcher Sonny Gray. It’s safe to say that this trade deadline will be an interesting one for the team.

In a recent report from Katie Woo of The Athletic, it was revealed that the Cardinals are open to entertaining offers for both Arenado and Gray. However, the chances of a trade actually happening are slim.

The main reason for this low probability is that both players have full no-trade clauses in their contracts. This was a move that Arenado reportedly made last offseason, when he vetoed a potential deal to the Houston Astros.

Rumors Swirl Around Potential Trades for Cardinals’ Arenado and Gray Before Trade Deadline

As the trade deadline looms, the St. Louis Cardinals find themselves at the center of speculation. Two key players on the team, Nolan Arenado and Sonny Gray, could potentially be on the move before July 31.

According to reports from Katie Woo of The Athletic, the Cardinals are open to offers for both Arenado and Gray, but the chances of a trade are slim. This is due to the fact that both players have full no-trade clauses in their contracts, with Arenado reportedly vetoing a deal to the Houston Astros last offseason.

“St. Louis will entertain offers on Nolan Arenado and Sonny Gray,” Woo wrote. “Both players have full no-trade clauses but could be motivated to waive them for the right fit. Talks with contending teams have begun, but are still in the preliminary stages.”

While the odds of a trade may be low, the Cardinals are financially motivated to move these players. Gray is owed $35 million in 2026, the final guaranteed year of his contract, while Arenado has $31 million remaining over the next two seasons (not including deferrals).

As the rumors continue to swirl, Woo also notes that other teams may be interested in Arenado’s defensive prowess, despite his offensive struggles with the Cardinals this season. He currently holds a .239 batting average with 10 home runs and 43 RBIs.

Meanwhile, Gray has a 10-4 record with a 4.33 ERA and 128 strikeouts. However, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports, he has no interest in waiving his no-trade clause. This information was reported in late June, so it is possible that his stance could change as the deadline approaches.

“Rival teams would love to get their hands on Cardinals starters Sonny Gray and Miles Mikolas, but they have full no-trade clauses, and have no interest in waiving them,” Nightengale wrote.

Despite the potential interest in Arenado, Nightengale also reports that the Cardinals are prepared to keep him through the deadline, as there has been limited interest from other teams.

It remains to be seen how active the Cardinals will be before the trade deadline and if any deal will involve Arenado or Gray. As the clock ticks down, all eyes will be on St. Louis to see if any major moves are made.
