The San Diego Padres: On the Hunt for Offensive Boost and Bullpen Additions
The San Diego Padres are on a mission to strengthen their offense, but they are also keeping an eye out for potential deals to bolster their already impressive bullpen. And one team on their radar is the St. Louis Cardinals, who have a reliever that has caught the attention of the Padres.
According to sources, the Padres have expressed interest in left-handed reliever JoJo Romero from the Cardinals. The 24-year-old has shown promise in his short time in the majors, posting a 3.86 ERA in 21 appearances last season.
But while the Padres are in need of a reliever, it seems that they may not be a perfect fit for another Cardinals pitcher, Ryan Helsley. Sources say that the Padres are not currently pursuing a deal for the right-hander.
The Padres, who finished with the second-best record in the National League last season, are determined to make a strong push for the playoffs once again. And with their sights set on both offensive and bullpen upgrades, they are leaving no stone unturned in their search for the perfect additions to their roster.
The San Diego Padres: Eyeing a Trade for Cardinals’ Lefty Reliever JoJo Romero
The San Diego Padres are on the hunt for offensive reinforcements, but they are also exploring deals to bolster their already league-best bullpen. And one team on their radar is the St. Louis Cardinals, who have a reliever that has caught the attention of the Padres.
According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, the Padres have expressed interest in left-handed reliever JoJo Romero, rather than their initial target Ryan Helsley. Woo reports, “The San Diego Padres, though in the market for a reliever, are not viewed as a fit for Helsley at this time.” Romero, who has a 2.12 ERA this season and is under team control until 2027, has piqued the interest of the Padres.
Despite having one of the best bullpens in the league, the Padres are still looking to add another reliever. And while they have their sights set on Romero, they are not interested in the top rental option from the Cardinals. Romero, who is one of the few left-handed relievers available, is likely to attract attention from multiple teams due to his impressive performance this season.
In 34 innings for the Cardinals, Romero has a 2.12 ERA, 34 strikeouts, 15 walks, and has only allowed one home run. His 198 ERA+ is a career best and he has already accumulated 1.1 WAR, more than half of his career WAR in just six seasons.
At 28 years old, Romero is under team control until 2026, making him a valuable asset for the Cardinals. This means that the Padres may have to pay a high price to acquire him. However, if they are willing to part with Robert Suarez, as rumored, they could potentially land Romero, who has a lower ERA this season than Suarez’s 3.50.
The Padres’ lack of interest in Helsley and their interest in Romero is a storyline to watch as the trade deadline approaches. If they are looking to add a reliever, it seems they are targeting someone who will be with the team for more than just a few years.
Romero would be an intriguing addition for the Padres. While he may not be a big name on the market, his impressive stats make him a valuable trade target. With only one day left before the deadline, the Padres are making a move for Romero, a left-handed reliever who could further strengthen their already dominant bullpen.
