St. Louis Cardinals’ Masyn Winn: A Rising Star in the Making
St. Louis Cardinals’ shortstop Masyn Winn is making waves in his second full season in the Majors. While he still has room to grow and reach his full potential, fans have already caught glimpses of his long-term potential.
After showcasing his defensive skills in the Cardinals’ recent series against the San Diego Padres, the 23-year-old reflected on his role in one of baseball’s most prestigious franchises.
“Offensively, I’m still fine-tuning some things, but defensively, I feel like I’m that guy. I love that my teammates and staff have confidence in me,” Winn shared with John Denton of MLB.com. “I want to be a part of this team for a long time, and making plays like the one on Saturday will help make that happen.”
In 100 games this season, Winn has maintained a solid batting average of .270 with an OPS+ just below the league average at 99. He also boasts a low strikeout rate of only 17.3 percent, a promising sign for a young hitter. On the base paths, he ranks in the 78th percentile for sprint speed, although it hasn’t translated into stolen bases just yet.
But as Winn acknowledged, he is still working on improving his offensive game. However, defensively, he shines, earning high marks as a shortstop with exceptional range and one of the strongest arms in the game at his position, according to Baseball Savant.
His manager, Oliver Marmol, is impressed with the young shortstop’s abilities. “He’s an electric player who can beat you in multiple ways,” Marmol praised. “He has power, can use the whole field, and is a threat on the bases. And defensively, he can definitely beat you. He’s the type of player you can build a team around, and he’s only getting better. He gives his all every time he steps on the field.
