St. Louis Cardinals’ Young Shortstop Masyn Winn Gets Encouraging News on Lingering Knee Injury

St. Louis Cardinals’ rising star shortstop Masyn Winn has been battling knee discomfort for quite some time now, but the team received some positive updates on Monday afternoon.

According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold, Winn underwent his second MRI of the season on his knee and the results showed signs of improvement.

No Risk of Further Injury for Winn, Says Cardinals’ Manager

Cardinals’ manager Oli Marmol assured that there is no risk of further injury for Winn if he continues to play on the knee injury. While Winn may need surgery in the offseason, he is not expected to miss any playing time.

Winn Continues to Play Through Knee Injury

The young shortstop has been dealing with his knee injury since the All-Star break. He received an injection to help with the pain during the break and had played in every game until this past weekend.

However, Winn was forced to sit out the final two games against the Tampa Bay Rays and underwent his MRI on Monday.

MRI Results Show Improvement for Winn

“It doesn’t feel great, obviously, and I would have played today if it felt good, but we’re going to get some testing done and see what it shows,” Winn said (h/t Redbird Rants). “I got an MRI earlier in the year, and it showed a little something. I’m assuming this one’s going to show a little more, but I don’t think that changes my outlook.”

Fortunately, the MRI results showed improvement and Winn is back in the Cardinals’ lineup on Monday as they begin a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Winn Focused on Helping Team Make Playoffs

“It very well might [require surgery] and that’s something we’ll look at at the end of the year, but right now I want to be out there on the field,” Winn said (h/t Redbird Rants). “We’ve still got a chance to make the playoffs and play some good ball, so I want to be out there and playing shortstop as much as I can.”

At this point, Winn playing does not pose a risk of further injury to his knee, so it will be a matter of managing the pain. The determined shortstop is fully committed to helping his team in their playoff push and will continue to play through the discomfort.
