The Cardinals Front Office Faces Tough Decisions After This Season
The St. Louis Cardinals have had a rollercoaster of a season, filled with highs and lows. But as the regular season comes to a close, the front office will have some tough decisions to make. With key players becoming free agents and a disappointing performance overall, the Cardinals will have to carefully consider their next moves.
One of the biggest decisions the front office will have to make is whether or not to re-sign star outfielder, Marcell Ozuna. Ozuna has been a key contributor to the team’s success, but with his contract expiring, the Cardinals will have to decide if they are willing to pay the hefty price tag for his services.
In addition to Ozuna, the Cardinals will also have to make decisions on other free agents such as pitcher Adam Wainwright and catcher Yadier Molina. Both players have been with the team for over a decade and have been integral parts of the Cardinals’ success. However, with their age and declining performance, the front office will have to weigh the sentimental value against the practicality of keeping them on the team.
But it’s not just free agents that the Cardinals will have to consider. The team’s overall performance this season has been lackluster, and changes may need to be made in order to improve. This could mean making trades or bringing in
Cardinals’ Outfielder Outlook for 2026: Uncertain Future Ahead
The St. Louis Cardinals have had a disappointing season, falling short of expectations and out of playoff contention. As the front office looks towards next year, they face tough decisions, particularly in the crowded outfield.
With Chaim Bloom taking over as president of baseball operations, changes are expected to be made. One player to watch in the final month of the season is Lars Nootbaar. Currently on a one-year deal, he will be eligible for arbitration after this season and is playing for a potential raise. He has two more arbitration years before becoming a free agent.
As the Cardinals prepare for a non-competitive season in 2026, Bloom will likely closely evaluate all outfielders, including top prospects Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker.
Katie Woo of The Athletic sheds light on the pressure facing Nootbaar and others in the final stretch of the season:
“This next month is going to be about the future. We have talked about the runway for Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker to an exhausting point…As we find ourselves in the final five weeks of the season, 30-plus games to go, it’s pretty clear that Nootbaar is going to be playing for his future as a Cardinals this final month. Let’s see what he is going to do there. He’s going to get some consistent time, especially with Victor Scott out.”
Nootbaar’s performance this season has been average, with an OPS+ of 100 in over 100 games and a .236 batting average with 13 home runs. While solid, it may not be enough to secure his spot on the team, especially with his limited team control remaining. He could potentially be on the trade block as the Cardinals look to make changes for the future.
