Pirates’ Explosive First Inning Sets the Tone
The Pirates wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, erupting for five runs in the first inning. The first six batters all reached base against Cardinals’ pitcher Andre Pallante, with Bryan Reynolds leading the charge with a double that drove in the first run of the game. Andrew McCutchen followed suit with a single that brought in two more runs, and the Pirates were off to a strong start.
Jack Suwinski and Oneil Cruz also contributed to the first inning rally, with Suwinski doubling home a run and Cruz bringing in another on a groundout. By the end of the inning, the Pirates had a comfortable 5-0 lead.
Reynolds and Davis Lead the Charge
The Pirates continued to dominate in the second inning, with Reynolds hitting his second double of the game and scoring on a fielding error by Cardinals’ center fielder Lars Nootbaar. Spencer Horwitz also crossed the plate, and Reynolds advanced to third on the play. Cruz then brought Reynolds home with a groundout, extending the Pirates’ lead to 6-0.
In the third inning, catcher Henry Davis added to the Pirates’ lead with a 403-foot solo home run to left field. The impressive at-bat lasted 11 pitches and left Pallante reeling. By the end of the third inning, the Pirates had an 8-0 lead and were well on their way to victory.
