Milwaukee Brewers Sign Right-Hander Erick Fedde, Place All-Star Closer Trevor Megill on Injured List
Fedde Joins Third Organization This Season, Ready to Make Debut Against Arizona
The Milwaukee Brewers have added another arm to their pitching staff, signing right-hander Erick Fedde. The team also announced that All-Star closer Trevor Megill has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a right flexor strain.
Fedde, who was released by the Atlanta Braves just three days ago, was activated in time to be available for the Brewers’ home game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 32-year-old had a rough start to the season, posting an 8.10 ERA in five games with the Braves. Prior to that, he had a 5.22 ERA in 20 starts with the St. Louis Cardinals before being designated for assignment.
The Brewers are in need of healthy arms to help them through a grueling 18-day stretch where they will play 19 games. Manager Pat Murphy expressed his excitement about the signing, saying, “Great pickup, I think, for the situation we’re in.”
In addition to Fedde’s signing, the Brewers also had to make some adjustments to their pitching rotation. Quinn Priester, who was originally scheduled to start Wednesday’s game, has been pushed back to Friday due to a wrist issue. Aaron Ashby will now work as an opener on Wednesday, with Fedde coming into the game later.
As for Megill, the 31-year-old has been a key player for the Brewers this season, recording 30 saves in 44 appearances. However, he has struggled in his last few outings, blowing three of his last four save opportunities. After undergoing imaging, it was revealed that Megill has a flexor strain in his right arm. He reassured fans that it is only a mild strain and that there is no damage to his ligament.
In Megill’s absence, manager Murphy has named Abner Uribe as the first option for save opportunities. Uribe has been a reliable reliever for the Brewers this season, with a 1.71 ERA and three saves in 63 appearances.
The Brewers also made a move to their injured list, transferring right-hander Logan Henderson to the 60-day list.
