St. Louis Cardinals’ Ivan Herrera hits game-winning home run to keep playoff hopes alive

The St. Louis Cardinals are fighting for their playoff lives and on Tuesday night, catcher Ivan Herrera stepped up in a big way to help keep their hopes alive. In a crucial game against the Oakland Athletics, Herrera hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

The 25-year-old Panamanian’s home run not only helped secure a win for the Cardinals, but it also tied him with Philadelphia Phillies star Kyle Schwarber for the most go-ahead home runs in the sixth inning or later in the National League.

After the game, Herrera spoke about his clutch performance, saying “I don’t know, I’m just trying to hit the ball hard.” He also added that his main focus is helping the team win and that his home run put them in a good position to do so.

Herrera’s home run came after a tough at-bat against Athletics reliever Michael Kelly. After taking a foul ball and drawing a ball, Herrera turned on an 83 mph pitch and launched it 414 feet for the game-winning home run.

This was Herrera’s second consecutive game with a home run, as he also hit one in Monday’s loss to the Athletics. He now has 13 home runs and 53 RBIs on the season, with a batting average of .287/.368/.450.

The Cardinals are still holding onto hope for a playoff spot, but with a 69-71 record, they have a tough road ahead. They are currently 16.5 games out of first place in the National League Central and 6.5 games out of the Wild Card picture. However, Herrera’s clutch performance gives them a glimmer of hope as they continue to fight for a spot in the postseason.
