The Trade Deadline Looms, But Red Sox Manager Alex Cora is Already Eyeing the Offseason

With just over a week left until the trade deadline, the Boston Red Sox are already looking ahead to the upcoming offseason. And for manager Alex Cora, there’s one specific thing on his mind: the potential reunion with former player Kyle Schwarber.

Currently, Cora’s Red Sox are facing off against Schwarber’s current team, the Philadelphia Phillies, in a three-game series. The Phillies have taken the first two games, with scores of 3-2 and 4-1, respectively.

But after Tuesday’s game, Cora couldn’t help but express his interest in Schwarber’s impending free agency. The three-time All-Star could potentially make a return to Fenway Park, and Cora is “very intrigued” by the possibility.

As the trade deadline approaches, all eyes are on the Red Sox and their potential moves. But for Cora, it seems the focus is already shifting to the offseason and the potential addition of Schwarber to the team. Only time will tell if this reunion will become a reality.

Attention Grabbing First Sentence:

“With the trade deadline looming, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora is already looking ahead to the offseason and the possibility of a reunion with former player Kyle Schwarber, who is set to become a free agent.”

The trade deadline is just over one week away, but for Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora, it’s never too early to start thinking about the future. And for Cora, that future could include a reunion with one of his former players, Kyle Schwarber, who is set to become a free agent this upcoming offseason.

Currently, Cora’s Red Sox are facing off against Schwarber’s current team, the Philadelphia Phillies, in a three-game series. After Tuesday’s game, Cora expressed his interest in the possibility of Schwarber joining the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

“He’s a guy that, in a short period of time, he touched everyone here,” Cora said, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Scott Lauber.

Cora was referring to Schwarber’s brief stint with the Red Sox in 2021, when he played 41 regular-season games for the organization. During that time, Schwarber impressed with a .291 batting average, seven home runs, and a .957 OPS.

But it was during the postseason that Schwarber truly shined, hitting three more home runs, including a grand slam in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the Houston Astros. Unfortunately, the Red Sox fell just two games short of a trip to the World Series.

Since then, Schwarber has continued to be one of the game’s top sluggers. In 2025, he has hit 33 home runs (third in the National League), driven in 75 runs (fourth in the NL), and accumulated a .934 OPS.

With the Red Sox’s former designated hitter Rafael Devers now playing for the San Francisco Giants, there could be an opening for Schwarber to join the franchise this winter.
