FEMA Conducting Architectural Survey of St. Louis Structures Damaged by Severe Weather
This is a public notice for all residents and communities in the City of St. Louis who were affected by the severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding on May 16, 2025. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of the Interior and the Missouri State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), is conducting an architectural historic survey of city structures and residential homes that were damaged during the disaster.
Survey Objectives
The survey aims to identify and evaluate the historic integrity and significance of properties in the area based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria. This includes taking photographs of the exterior front and side facades of residential and other potentially significant historic buildings, identifying the architectural style, and collecting data to document the impact of the storm on building structures. All exterior photographs will be taken from public right-of-way and no personally identifiable information will be collected.
Assisting in Recovery Efforts
The results of the architectural survey will assist in the review of proposed FEMA-funded activities to aid in the recovery of neighborhoods in the City of St. Louis. It will also help FEMA evaluate properties or historic districts that are currently listed or could potentially be listed on the NRHP.
Request for Comments
FEMA is requesting comments from all interested parties to consider and evaluate the impacts of the architectural historic survey on the community.
