Outfielder Lars Nootbaar Proves He Belongs in Cardinals Lineup, Amid Uncertain Future
As his career hangs in the balance, Cards’ Lars Nootbaar is on fire, recording his fifth straight multi-hit game in a 7-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. This is a career-best for Nootbaar and the longest such streak by a Cardinal since Tommy Edman in 2019, according to MLB.com’s John Denton.
Nootbaar, who has faced struggles and injuries during his five seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, is finally living up to his high potential at a pivotal time in his career. The 27-year-old has been on fire, batting .524 over his last five games and raising his batting average from .228 to .244. In the month of August, he has a batting average of .339 with five doubles and seven RBI, a significant improvement from his .169 average in June that cost him a regular spot in the lineup.
“I feel pretty good, and I’m just sticking to the work that we’ve been doing and trying to be on time at the plate as much as possible,” Nootbaar said, per Denton. “I just want to swing at good pitches. Hitting the ball the other way is not a conscious effort at all. I’m just trying to be on time, square the ball up, and wherever it goes, it goes.”
As Denton notes, Nootbaar has consistently improved his game after the All-Star break, hitting 25 of his 40 home runs in the previous three seasons (2022-2024). He typically returns to Southern California, where he played college baseball, and works on his swing with teammate Nolan Arenado.
“I’ve usually had that midseason retooling, and that’s what I would credit it to,” Nootbaar said.
This season, Nootbaar has a batting average of .245, an on-base percentage of .345, and a slugging percentage of .418 with 13 home runs and 44 RBI. He will have another opportunity to continue his hot streak tonight against Tampa Bay, as he aims to prove his worth to the organization.
“He does have a lot on the line, and I know he’s working hard towards it because he’s always going to do that,” Cardinals manager Oli Marmol said of Nootbaar. “He takes his craft seriously, and he’s hoping that his second half and these last several weeks play into that. It’s important for him to finish strong.
