The St. Louis Cardinals Shake Up Roster: Garrett Hampson Designated for Assignment

In a surprising move, the St. Louis Cardinals have designated utility man Garrett Hampson for assignment just before their three-game series against the Seattle Mariners. This decision has left fans and analysts alike questioning the team’s strategy and the future of Hampson’s career with the Cardinals.

Hampson, who has been with the Cardinals since 2018, has been struggling at the plate this season with a batting average of .215 and only one home run. Despite his versatility in playing multiple positions, the team has decided to make room for other players on the roster.

This move comes as a shock to many, as Hampson has been a reliable player for the Cardinals in the past. However, with the team currently sitting in third place in their division, it seems they are willing to take risks in order to improve their performance.

The Cardinals have not yet announced who will be taking Hampson’s spot on the roster, but it is expected that they will make a corresponding move before the series against the Mariners begins.

As for Hampson, he will now go through the waiver process where other teams will have the opportunity to claim him. If he goes unclaimed, he will be sent to the Cardinals’ minor league team.

This decision by the Cardinals has left many wondering about the future of Hampson’s career and the impact it will have on the team’s performance. Only time will tell if this move will pay off for the Cardinals or if they will regret letting go of a valuable player.

Cardinals DFA Veteran Utility Man Before Mariners Series

The St. Louis Cardinals are making moves before their upcoming series against the Seattle Mariners, including the activation of Alec Burleson from the IL and the promotion of Nick Raquet for his MLB debut. However, the team also announced the demotion of Andre Granillo to Triple-A and the DFA of veteran utility man Garrett Hampson.

Hampson, who was claimed off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds in June, has already played for three different teams this season and five in the last two. But with the Cardinals making a push for their fourth straight series win, they needed to make room for Burleson’s return from a wrist injury.

Despite the challenges the Cardinals have faced this season, they are determined to secure a spot in the postseason. With just three weeks left in the regular season, they are currently 4.5 games behind the New York Mets for the final Wild Card spot.

While Hampson’s production at the plate has been lackluster this season, his versatility in the field has been valued by teams since his debut in 2018 with the Colorado Rockies. In 62 games with three different teams this season, he has a .143 batting average, .250 on-base percentage, .169 slugging percentage, and a .419 OPS, with one RBI and three stolen bases.
