Cardinals Provide Encouraging Update on Nolan Gorman’s Injury Status

The St. Louis Cardinals have given fans a glimmer of hope regarding the injury status of top prospect Nolan Gorman. The 20-year-old third baseman suffered a left shoulder injury during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 20th. However, the team has announced that Gorman’s injury is not as serious as initially feared and he is expected to make a full recovery.

According to the Cardinals’ medical staff, Gorman’s MRI results showed no structural damage to his shoulder. This is a huge relief for both the team and fans, as a serious injury could have potentially derailed Gorman’s promising career.

Gorman, who was drafted 19th overall in the 2018 MLB Draft, has been a standout player in the Cardinals’ minor league system. In 2019, he hit .248 with 15 home runs and 60 RBIs in 125 games for the Class-A Peoria Chiefs. He was also selected to play in the All-Star Futures Game that year.

This season, Gorman has continued to impress, hitting .280 with 11 home runs and 31 RBIs in 49 games for the Double-A Springfield Cardinals. He

Injury Update: Second Baseman Nolan Gorman to Begin Rehab Assignment with Double-A Springfield

After being sidelined with lower back pain and placed on the injured list earlier this month, the St. Louis Cardinals received some positive news on Monday. Second baseman Nolan Gorman, who has been dealing with a recurring back injury, will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Tuesday.

This injury has been a cause for concern for the Cardinals, as Gorman has experienced the same issue in 2023, resulting in a stint on the injured list. Manager Oliver Marmol addressed the issue earlier this month, acknowledging that it could be a problem for the 25-year-old second baseman.

“I’ve had to answer that question every year he’s been with us. It flares up every year at some point, and it’s just part of it,” Marmol told MLB.com’s Michael Reynolds.

Although Gorman was healthy throughout the 2024 season, he has never played more than 119 games in a season since entering the league in 2022. He has also been placed on the injured list four times in the past three years.

Despite these setbacks, Gorman had a breakout season in 2023, leading the Cardinals in home runs and setting career highs in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS. He hit 27 home runs and 76 RBI that season.

In 66 games so far in 2025, Gorman has a .219 batting average, .310 on-base percentage, .431 slugging percentage, and .719 OPS, with nine home runs and 29 RBI. As he works his way back from injury, the Cardinals will be hoping for a return to his 2023 form to help them in their push for a spot in the NL Wild Card race.
