What’s Next for the St. Louis Cardinals? A Soft Sell or a Strong Rebuild?

The St. Louis Cardinals have been playing lackluster baseball lately, leading them to consider a soft sell approach. However, with plenty of valuable trade assets, the question remains – will they actually make any moves?

Cardinals’ Remaining Deadline Approach: A Look at the Potential Trades

According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, the Cardinals are expected to make one final trade before the deadline. While teams have shown interest in players like Brendan Donovan, Alec Burleson, and Lars Nootbaar, the Cardinals have not entertained any offers so far. President of baseball operations John Mozeliak has stated that if the Cardinals do sell, it will likely only be players on expiring contracts, similar to their approach in 2023. This includes players like Ryan Helsley, Steven Matz, and Phil Maton, who are all pending free agents.

Retaining Young Talent: The Key to a Successful Rebuild

Donovan, Burleson, and Nootbaar are all under team control for several more years, making them valuable assets for the Cardinals. Despite being 10 games back in the National League Central and 5.5 games back for the third Wild Card spot, the Cardinals could potentially make a run for the playoffs. However, their chances are slim and it may be more beneficial to focus on rebuilding for a stronger 2026 season.

The Dilemma of Selling vs. Rebuilding

While a full sale may appease some fans who are tired of the team’s mediocrity, retaining young talent like Donovan, Burleson, and Nootbaar could lead to a better future for the Cardinals. Donovan, in particular, has been performing well with a .285 batting average, .774 OPS, and 119 OPS+. However, sacrificing a chunk of their young core goes against the traditional “Cardinal way.”

Looking Ahead: A Focus on Next Year

For now, it seems like the Cardinals will continue to play out the rest of the season without making any major moves. Their attention will likely shift towards rebuilding for a stronger 2026 campaign. With players like Willson Contreras, Iván Herrera, and Masyn Winn, the Cardinals have a solid foundation to build upon for the future.
