Jordan Walker’s RBI Single Helps Cardinals Defeat Dodgers 5-3 in Wednesday’s Game
LOS ANGELES – In a thrilling game on Wednesday, the Cardinals emerged victorious with a 5-3 win over the Dodgers. The standout player of the night was none other than Shohei Ohtani, who once again proved why he is considered the best player in baseball.
However, the Cardinals were able to take advantage of Ohtani’s limited pitching due to his ongoing recovery from Tommy John surgery. After striking out eight of the first 14 batters he faced and hitting a two-run homer, Ohtani was replaced by the Dodgers bullpen, giving the Cardinals a chance to rally and secure the win.
The turning point came in the eighth inning when a throwing error by the Dodgers allowed the Cardinals to tie the score at 3-3 and eventually take the lead. Rookie Jordan Walker had a standout performance with three hits, including the crucial RBI single that brought in the tying and go-ahead runs.
The Cardinals’ bullpen also played a key role in securing the win, with Riley O’Brien earning his first save by getting the final four outs of the game. This victory marks the second series win for the Cardinals since late June, and the first time they have won the season series against the Dodgers since 2019.
Game Breakdown:
At the Plate:
The Cardinals got on the board early with a run off Ohtani in the second inning, thanks to a lost popup in the sun by the Dodgers. Brendan Donovan’s bunt single brought in the run after a stolen base and a ground out.
Lars Nootbaar cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning with a RBI groundout, following a leadoff walk and single. In the eighth, Nootbaar once again came through with a double that brought in the insurance run for the Cardinals.
On the Mound:
Starter Matthew Liberatore allowed three runs over four innings, with one of them being unearned due to a throwing error. The highlight of the night was Ohtani’s two-run home run in the third inning, which came with first base open and one out. Despite the risk, the Cardinals chose to pitch to him.
Kyle Leahy had a strong outing, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings and recording four strikeouts. O’Brien came in to relieve JoJo Romero in the eighth inning and successfully got out of a tough situation with a runner on first and two outs. He then pitched a clean ninth inning to secure the win for the Cardinals.
Key Stat:
This was only the second series win for the Cardinals since sweeping the Guardians in late June. Out of their last 10 series, they have only won two out of three games in one series, against the Nationals.

Nolan Arenado will be heading to the Cardinals’ spring training complex in Jupiter to work on his injured shoulder and may begin a rehab assignment soon. Willson Contreras was out of the lineup due to a stomach bug.

The Cardinals will have a day off on Thursday before returning to Busch Stadium to face the Cubs in a weekend series starting on Friday night.
