Tennessee’s Strikeout King Signs Below-Slot, Giving Cardinals Draft Flexibility
In a strategic move, the St. Louis Cardinals have signed Tennessee’s strikeout king to a below-slot deal, allowing them more flexibility to pursue high-upside prospects in the later rounds of the draft.
The Cardinals, known for their savvy drafting and player development, have made a calculated decision to save money on their first-round pick and use it to their advantage in the later rounds.
By signing the strikeout king below his expected slot value, the Cardinals have freed up additional funds to potentially take a chance on players with high potential but may come with a higher price tag.
This move shows the Cardinals’ commitment to building a strong and well-rounded team, not just focusing on one top prospect. It also highlights their confidence in their ability to find hidden gems in the later rounds of the draft.
The strikeout king, a dominant pitcher from Tennessee, has caught the attention of many teams with his impressive strikeout numbers and potential for growth. However, the Cardinals were able to secure him with a below-slot deal, giving them an advantage over other teams.
This signing also speaks to the strikeout king’s trust in the Cardinals’ organization and their ability to develop him into a successful major league player.
With this strategic move, the Cardinals have set themselves up for success in the draft and have shown their commitment to building a strong and competitive team for years to come.
St. Louis Cardinals Sign Top Draft Pick Liam Doyle to $7.25 Million Bonus
After teasing fans with Instagram photos from Busch Stadium, the St. Louis Cardinals have officially signed their top draft pick, left-handed ace Liam Doyle, to a $7.25 million signing bonus. This move comes in nearly $900K under the slot value of $8.13 million for the No. 5 overall pick and could have a significant impact on the rest of their draft class.
Doyle, who was named SEC Pitcher of the Year in his lone season at Tennessee, set a program record with 164 strikeouts in just 95⅔ innings. He also led the nation in strikeouts per nine (15.43) and had an impressive WHIP of 0.99. With a fastball that sits around 96-99 mph and a splitter and slider that are equally effective, Doyle has been ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in the draft by Keith Law. Law praises Doyle’s “invisible” fastball, as well as his command and aggression on the mound. Many were surprised when he fell to the Cardinals at the fifth overall pick.
By signing Doyle below slot value, the Cardinals now have the flexibility to potentially go over slot on later picks, such as Ryan Mitchell (No. 55) who has committed to Georgia Tech, or other high-upside prep players.
Doyle is expected to start in either Double-A or High-A, depending on how the Cardinals want to challenge his elite strikeout abilities. With his fiery mound presence, “all gas, no brakes” mentality, and impressive arsenal of pitches, Doyle could quickly become a fan favorite.
