Welcome to Memphis: JJ Wetherholt Makes Triple-A Debut for St. Louis Cardinals System
MEMPHIS – The city of Memphis was buzzing with excitement as the number one prospect in the St. Louis Cardinals system, JJ Wetherholt, made his Triple-A debut on Wednesday night. And he did not disappoint, going 3 for 8 in a doubleheader against Charlotte.
Those three hits were no ordinary hits, as they all went for extra bases – a double, triple, and a mammoth 424-foot home run to straightaway centerfield. It’s been less than a year since Wetherholt was selected seventh overall in the 2024 draft, and now he finds himself just one step away from the big leagues in St. Louis.
“I was a pretty low radar guy coming out of high school,” Wetherholt said. “But I was fortunate enough to have a really good college career at West Virginia. I got drafted basically a year ago and have been able to have some success in the minor leagues.”
Despite his success, Wetherholt remains humble and focused on improving his game. “It’s great to be in this spot and have some success, but I still think there’s a lot of stuff I’ve got to get better at and continue to grow as a player to become the player that I want to be,” he said. “This is all just part of a dream that I’m chasing, and I’m just trying to get better each day.”
Wetherholt followed up his debut with another strong performance on Thursday, going 1 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored to help his team secure their first AAA win over the Knights.
