Cardinals’ Willson Contreras Out of Lineup After Frustrating Injury
St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman Willson Contreras was noticeably absent from the lineup on Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies. This comes just one day after he was hit in the foot by a pitch and broke his bat in a fit of frustration.
The 33-year-old slugger, who is currently listed as day-to-day with a right foot contusion, was struck by a sweeping pitch from Rockies’ starter Kyle Freeland in the fourth inning. As he made his way towards first base, Contreras angrily tossed the two pieces of his broken bat towards the Cardinals’ dugout.
Cards’ Contreras Injured After Being Hit by Pitch and Breaking Bat in Frustration
St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras was forced to sit out Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies after being hit in the foot by a pitch and breaking his bat in frustration. The incident occurred during Tuesday’s game when Rockies starter Kyle Freeland’s pitch struck Contreras in the fourth inning. In a fit of anger, Contreras slammed his bat into the ground and snapped it over his knee. Despite remaining in the game until the sixth inning, he was eventually replaced by Nolan Gorman.
The Cardinals have listed Contreras as day-to-day with a right foot contusion and have stated that X-rays did not reveal any structural damage. This season, Contreras has been hit by a league-leading 18 pitches, second only to Randy Arozarena and Ty France.
Despite the injury, Contreras has been a key player for the Cardinals, leading the team with 16 home runs and 65 RBIs. However, his frustration and outburst may have caused more harm than good.
