Cards’ Top Prospect Nathan Church Hits First Big League Home Run, Breaks Through After Rough Start
The transition to the big leagues can be tough for any player, but for St. Louis Cardinals’ top prospect Nathan Church, it was especially challenging. The 25-year-old center fielder, ranked No. 14 by MLB Pipeline, went 0-for-14 in his first four games in the majors. However, on Friday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, Church finally broke through and made his mark on the field.
Church’s first Major League hit came in the fifth inning, when he drilled a single to left field off righty Adrian Houser. But he didn’t stop there. In the seventh inning, Church hit his first career home run, a two-run shot to center field that traveled a Statcast-projected 414 feet. Despite Church’s impressive performance, the Cardinals ultimately fell to the Rays, 10-6, at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
The UC Irvine standout was drafted by the Cardinals in the 11th round of the 2022 Draft. He had a stellar season in Triple-A, with a .335/.400/.521 slash line over 53 games. Church also spent time in Single-A and Double-A before making his Triple-A debut on June 3.
Despite his offensive struggles in his first few games in the majors, Church remained positive and focused on making the most of his opportunity. He even made a strong defensive play on Thursday, showcasing his strong throwing arm by getting Tampa’s Nick Fortes out at third base.
