This Time of Year is Perfect for Farm Fresh Produce and More at Soulard Farmers Market

It’s that time of year again – the peak season for farm fresh produce and other agricultural goods. And what better way to celebrate than with National Farmers Market Week (Aug. 3-9, 2025)? This week honors the hard work and contributions of farmers to our food system and communities.

But for the City of St. Louis, there’s even more to celebrate. The city is home to Soulard Farmers Market, one of the oldest and most popular farmers markets in the country. Not only is it a historic landmark and tourist destination, but it’s also the longest continuously operating market west of the Mississippi.

Soulard Farmers Market holds a special place in the hearts of the St. Louis community. Not only is it centrally located, making it easily accessible for shoppers, but it also offers budget-friendly fresh foods, prepared foods, apparel, souvenirs, and other goods.

And now, the market is about to receive some major upgrades. The exterior of the market will soon undergo significant improvements, including electrical updates, new roofing, fascia, and soffit. The vendor wings of the market, which run between 7th Street and 9th Street, will also be getting a makeover with tuckpointing. Additionally, the market’s architectural and style elements, worn down by age and weather, will be repaired and preserved.

According to Greg Hayes, Director of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry, “Soulard Farmers Market is deeply rooted in the history of St. Louis. It has played a vital role as a center of commerce in our thriving urban setting, connecting farmers and vendors with the community. This investment in the market ensures its continued longevity while maintaining its unique historic features.”

With over 100 vendors, including six local farms, Soulard Farmers Market offers a wide variety of produce, fresh meat and fish, baked goods, honey, candy, beverages, snacks, and prepared meals. Non-food vendors also sell apparel, health and beauty accessories, fresh flowers, and arts and crafts.

While the market has long-standing partnerships with many vendors, it has also become a crucial part of the start-up, development, and future of several small businesses. According to market manager Bob Ray, “The market provides a low-cost, low-risk setting for entrepreneurs. With affordable rent and a steady stream of customers, it serves as a small business incubator and an opportunity for entrepreneurs to build and refine their new businesses.” In fact, successful businesses like Freddie Lee’s Gourmet Sauces (now sold in 1,000 stores) and Lona’s Lil Eats, a 2019 James Beard semi-finalist, got their start at the market and now have their own locations.

If you’re interested in visiting Soulard Farmers Market, it’s open year-round from Wednesday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, individual vendor hours may vary. You can find the market at 730 Carroll Street in St. Louis, MO 63104. Metered street parking is available around the market, and there is a free public parking lot across from 7th Street and Carroll Street. So come on down and experience the history, community, and delicious offerings at Soulard Farmers Market.
