“Donovan’s Double Leads Cardinals to Victory over Rockies in Eighth Inning”
In a nail-biting game on Monday night, Brendan Donovan came through in the clutch for the St. Louis Cardinals with a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning. The Cardinals were able to hold on to their lead, thanks to a stellar performance from pitcher Miles Mikolas, who didn’t give up a single hit through 5 1/3 innings.
The Colorado Rockies, on the other hand, continued their downward spiral with their eighth straight loss. Juan Mejia, who had been brought in to hold the 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, faltered and ultimately took the loss for the Rockies. Meanwhile, Kyle Leahy stepped up for the Cardinals, pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings after Mikolas’ impressive 6 2/3 inning outing, his longest of the season.
It was a crucial win for the Cardinals, who are currently fighting for a spot in the playoffs. With this victory, they improve their record to 62-55 and remain in the hunt for a wild card spot. The Rockies, on the other hand, continue to struggle with a record of 52-65.
The Cardinals will look to continue their winning streak as they face the Rockies again on Tuesday night. With the momentum on their side, they will be a tough team to beat. Can the Rockies break their losing streak or will the Cardinals continue their climb towards the playoffs? Only time will tell. : Cardinals beat Rockies 3-2 in eighth inning comeback

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Brendan Donovan’s clutch two-run double in the eighth inning led the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the struggling Colorado Rockies on Monday night.
Juan Mejia (1-1) struggled to hold onto a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, while Kyle Leahy (3-1) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings after starter Miles Mikolas threw 6 2/3 no-hit innings.
Mikolas was on track for a win until the Rockies’ Warming Bernabel and Brenton Doyle drove in runs in the seventh inning to give Colorado a 2-1 lead. Tyler Freeman broke up Mikolas’ no-hit bid in the sixth inning. Mikolas finished the game with four hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.
The Cardinals’ Alec Burleson also drove in a run in the third inning, but it was Donovan’s double that ultimately secured the win for St. Louis.
Before Bernabel tied the game in the seventh, he also made a crucial defensive play in the sixth inning, throwing out Thomas Saggese at home on a squeeze play.
The key moment of the game came in the eighth inning when Donovan’s double put the Cardinals back in the lead.
Monday night’s game was the closest Mikolas has come to a no-hitter since June 11, 2024, when he took a no-hit bid into the seventh against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was just one strike away from a no-hitter against Pittsburgh on June 14, 2022.
Next up, the Rockies will send Kyle Freeland (2-12, 5.53 ERA) to the mound to face off against the Cardinals’ Matthew Liberatore (6-9, 3.98) on Tuesday.
