The Mariners Make a Record-Breaking Trade for Eugenio Suarez
In a major move, the Seattle Mariners have acquired Eugenio Suarez from the Arizona Diamondbacks. And with his impressive 36 home runs at the time of the trade, Suarez has already made history.
The Mariners wasted no time in securing the talented shortstop, who has been a standout player for the Diamondbacks this season. In exchange for Suarez, the Mariners sent a package of top prospects to Arizona.
But it’s not just the trade itself that has people talking. Suarez’s 36 home runs at the time of the deal set a new record for the most home runs by a shortstop before the All-Star break. This feat has only added to the excitement surrounding the trade.
Suarez’s power at the plate is sure to be a valuable asset for the Mariners as they continue their push for a playoff spot. And with his impressive record-breaking performance, fans are eagerly anticipating his debut in a Mariners uniform.
The Mariners have made a bold move in acquiring Suarez, and it’s clear that they have high hopes for his impact on the team. Only time will tell if this trade will pay off, but for now, all eyes are on Eugenio Suarez and his record-breaking home runs.
The Post Eugenio Suarez Trade Breaks 28-Year-Old Mark McGwire Record
Seattle Mariners fans have been treated to a season of record-breaking performances by All-Star catcher Cal Raleigh in 2025. However, the team’s latest acquisition, Eugenio Suarez, has also made history after being traded from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Mariners on Wednesday.
According to MLB’s Sarah Langs, Suarez’s 36 home runs with the Diamondbacks make him the player with the most home runs in a midseason trade. This surpasses the previous record held by Mark McGwire, who hit 34 home runs for the Oakland A’s before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1997.
Both Suarez and McGwire were 33 years old when they were traded, although Suarez recently turned 34. Despite not leading their respective leagues in home runs at the time of the trade, both players had impressive numbers. Suarez was third in the National League, behind Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Schwarber, while McGwire was second in the American League, behind Tino Martinez.
However, McGwire’s power really took off once he joined the Cardinals. In just 51 games, he hit 24 home runs, ultimately leading the league in home runs that season with 58. He also finished 16th in NL MVP voting despite his limited time in the league. The following year, McGwire broke Roger Maris’ single-season home run record with 70 dingers, and followed it up with 65 home runs in 1999.
While Suarez may not continue to break McGwire’s home run records, he is on pace to hit a career-high 56 home runs this season. His previous single-season high was 49 home runs in 2019 with the Cincinnati Reds.
Suarez’s addition to the Mariners comes as the team is making a push for the playoffs in the 2025 season. Although they are currently five games back in the AL West, they are tied with the Texas Rangers for the third Wild Card spot. The Mariners have been aggressive at the trade deadline, also acquiring Josh Naylor to upgrade their corner infield positions. With the addition of Suarez, along with AL MVP frontrunner Cal Raleigh and outfielders Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena, the Mariners have a formidable lineup that could make a run for the World Series.
