FEMA Denies Mayor’s Request to Extend Deadline for Individual Assistance Applications

St. Louisans Urged to Apply Before Midnight Tonight

ST. LOUIS – In a disappointing decision, FEMA has denied Mayor Cara Spencer’s request to extend the application deadline for individual assistance by 30 days. The deadline remains 11:59 p.m. today, Aug. 26.

“I strongly disagree with this denial, as we have seen hundreds of St. Louisans continue to apply for FEMA individual assistance each week,” said Mayor Spencer. “To everyone who has not applied yet, please make sure you do so before midnight. Even if you don’t get all the details today, the important thing is that your application gets registered with FEMA before the deadline. The hard-working FEMA staff will remain on the ground for weeks and will keep working with you.”

Chief Recovery Officer Julian Nicks expressed his disappointment as well, stating, “I share Mayor Spencer’s disappointment. Regardless of this decision, the Recovery Office will continue to work with impacted residents and FEMA to advocate for approval of late registrations and ensure that residents get access to much-needed support.”

Residents are urged to apply now at DisasterAssistance.gov, the FEMA app, 800-621-3362, or in person at one of the Disaster Recovery Centers, which will remain open until 7 p.m.

The Disaster Recovery Centers are located at:

  • Union Tabernacle M.B. Church – 626 N. Newstead Ave.
  • Urban League Entrepreneurship & Women’s Business Center – 4401 Natural Bridge Ave.

Applicants should bring identification, proof of address, a description of damage, and any insurance information they have.

Residents will still be able to receive assistance on their applications, including late registrations, from FEMA staff at the Disaster Recovery Centers until further notice.
