Sonny Gray Dominates as Cardinals Defeat Giants in Close Game

Sonny Gray put on a pitching clinic on Sunday, taking a no-hit bid into the sixth inning and leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants. The win leaves the Giants four games behind for the last NL wild card spot.

Gray, who now holds a 13-8 record, was in top form as he allowed only two hits and four walks in 5 1/3 innings, while striking out six batters. However, he faced some trouble in the sixth inning when he walked his first two batters, but managed to strike out Heliot Ramos before giving up an RBI single to Rafael Devers.

The Cardinals’ bullpen also played a crucial role in securing the win, with Riley O’Brien allowing only one hit in the ninth inning and retiring Patrick Bailey on a game-ending double-play grounder to earn his third save of the season. The Giants were limited to just five hits in the game.

The loss is a tough blow for the Giants, who are now four games behind the New York Mets for the third and final NL wild card spot. With a record of 72-71, the Giants are still in the hunt for their first postseason appearance since 2021, but will need to turn things around quickly in order to secure a spot in the playoffs. They have now lost five of their last six games.

Sep. 08, 2025 | 06:54 AM | ST. LOUIS – In a nail-biting game, the St. Louis Cardinals fell to the San Francisco Giants with a final score of 4-3 on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2025.

The Cardinals’ starting pitcher, Sonny Gray (13-8), put up a strong performance, allowing only three runs, two hits, and four walks in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts. However, he struggled in the sixth inning, walking his first two batters and ultimately allowing an RBI single to center by Rafael Devers.

The Giants’ pitcher, Riley O’Brien, also had a solid outing, allowing only one hit and retiring Patrick Bailey on a game-ending double play for his third save.

The game was a crucial one for the Giants, who are currently four games behind the New York Mets for the third and final NL wild card spot. Unfortunately for them, they have now lost two straight games after a hot streak of 11 wins in 12 games.

On the other hand, the Cardinals are now 14-5 when Gray starts at home, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win against the Giants.

The key moment of the game came in the sixth inning when Devers broke up Gray’s no-hit bid and the Giants were able to score three runs. However, the Cardinals’ defense stepped up, with catcher Pedro Pages and center fielder Nathan Church making crucial plays to limit the damage.

Next up, the Giants will face the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night, with Logan Webb (13-9, 3.17 ERA) taking the mound against Nabill Crismatt (2-0, 2.14 ERA). Meanwhile, the Cardinals will travel to Seattle to face the Mariners on Monday, with Miles Mikolas (7-10, 4.89 ERA) scheduled to start against Bryan Woo (12-7, 3.02 ERA).

Despite the loss, the Cardinals’ manager Oliver Marmol remains confident in his team’s abilities and is looking forward to bouncing back in their next game.

“We have a strong record when Gray starts at home, and we know we have the talent to compete with any team in the league,” Marmol said. “We’ll regroup and come back stronger in our next game.”

As the season winds down, both teams will be fighting for a spot in the postseason, making every game crucial for their chances of success. Fans can expect to see more intense and exciting games as the race for the playoffs heats up.
