Houston’s Ryan Mitchell Drafted by St. Louis Cardinals in 2025 MLB Draft

Houston baseball’s star shortstop Ryan Mitchell has been selected as the No. 55 overall pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 2025 MLB Draft on July 13. This highly anticipated moment marks a major milestone in Mitchell’s career as he joins the ranks of professional baseball players.

Mitchell, who had previously committed to Georgia Tech, was ranked as the No. 53 prospect by MLB.com leading up to the draft. His impressive senior season caught the attention of scouts and earned him several accolades, including The Commercial Appeal’s Player of the Year and Gatorade’s Tennessee Baseball Player of the Year. He was also a finalist for the TBCA Class 4A Mr. Baseball award.

Mitchell’s Stellar Performance on the Field

One of the main reasons for Mitchell’s high draft selection was his exceptional hitting abilities and physical prowess as a base runner. As the leadoff hitter for Houston High School, he consistently delivered strong performances and led his team to the 4A sectionals.

During his senior season, Mitchell dominated in almost every offensive category for Houston, boasting a batting average of .462, an on-base percentage of .615, and an OPS of 1.547. He also scored 64 runs, walked 49 times, and stole 39 bases. In addition, he hit 12 home runs, 13 doubles, and drove in 55 runs.

A Bright Future in Professional Baseball

Houston coach Lane McCarter praised Mitchell’s talent and potential, stating, “Ryan Mitchell is an explosive high school athlete with the ability to take over a game at any moment.” He also commended Mitchell’s maturity and discipline at the plate, comparing him to a veteran major league player and a future Hall of Famer.

Mitchell joins a prestigious list of Houston High School players who have been drafted into the MLB, including pitchers Matt Cain and Stu Pomeranz, who were selected in the first and second rounds, respectively, out of high school.
