Rockies Rally in Ninth to Defeat Cardinals 6-5 with Pinch-Hit Homer by Hunter Goodman

ST. LOUIS (AP) – In a thrilling comeback, pinch-hitter Hunter Goodman hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. The game was full of excitement and drama, with Goodman’s homer being the deciding moment.

With one out in the ninth, Goodman stepped up to the plate and connected on a 3-2 sinker from JoJo Romero (4-4), sending it 432 feet over the center field fence. This clutch hit scored Kyle Karros, who had led off the inning with a walk. Goodman, who leads the Rockies with 24 homers, also hit a 436-foot blast in Colorado’s 3-0 win on Tuesday.

Colorado’s Mickey Moniak also contributed to the team’s offensive power with a homer, while Karros had two hits and scored twice. Braxton Fulford drove in two runs to help secure the victory.

St. Louis put up a strong fight, with Alec Burleson and Lars Nootbaar each hitting a homer. Pedro Pagés also had a strong performance with two hits and two RBIs. However, it was not enough to hold off the Rockies’ late surge.

The game was tied at 5-5 heading into the ninth inning, but the Rockies were determined to come out on top. Jimmy Herget (1-2) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, striking out two batters, and Victor Vodnik closed out the game with his fourth save.

The Cardinals had taken a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning when Burleson hit an 0-2 fastball just inside the right field foul pole after Masyn Winn led off with a single. Nootbaar, who had been out of the lineup on Tuesday due to a knee injury, also contributed with a homer in the fourth inning.

However, the Rockies refused to back down and clawed their way back into the game with single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. The game was full of tense moments, including a close call when Jordan Beck was nearly picked off in the second inning, a play that the Cardinals challenged unsuccessfully.

Goodman’s homer was the key moment of the game, and it was a testament to his recent success at the plate. He has now homered in five of his last 10 games and six of his last 13.

The Rockies will look to continue their winning streak as they host the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. Bradley Blalock (1-3, 7.89 ERA) will take the mound for Colorado, while the Diamondbacks will send Eduardo Rodriguez (4-7, 5.68 ERA) to the mound.

The Cardinals, on the other hand, will face the struggling New York Yankees in a three-game series starting on Friday. Andre Pallante (6-9, 4.95 ERA) will start for St. Louis, while the Yankees will have Luis Gil (0-1, 7.27 ERA) on the mound.
