Mets Relief Pitcher Ryan Helsley Opens Up About Struggles Since Joining Team
Since joining the New York Mets midseason, relief pitcher Ryan Helsley has been facing some challenges on the mound. However, in a recent interview, Helsley revealed one of the main reasons for his struggles since coming to Flushing.
Helsley, who was acquired by the Mets in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, has been a key addition to the team’s bullpen. But despite his strong track record with the Cardinals, Helsley has not been able to replicate his success with the Mets.
In the interview, Helsley shared that the adjustment to a new team and a new city has been difficult for him. He explained that leaving behind his familiar surroundings and routines has affected his performance on the field.
“It’s been tough coming to a new team and a new city,” Helsley said. “I had a routine and a comfort level with the Cardinals, and it’s been a challenge to adjust to a new environment.”
Helsley also mentioned that the pressure of being a midseason acquisition and the expectations that come with it have added to his struggles. He acknowledged that he has been putting too much pressure on himself to perform and it has affected his mental game.
Despite these challenges, Helsley remains determined to overcome them and contribute to the Mets’ success. He has been working closely with the team’s coaching staff to make the necessary adjustments and get back on track.
“I’m not going to let these and a home set against the Washington Nationals on the horizon, they will need Helsley to figure things out sooner rather than later.
The Struggles of Mets Pitcher Acquired Before Trade Deadline
The New York Mets have been on a rollercoaster ride this season, but they are once again showing signs of being the team fans hoped for. With a four-and-a-half-game lead in the National League Wild Card race and a recent sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies, the Mets are back in the divisional race and looking strong. However, one of their key midseason acquisitions has been struggling since joining the team.
Ryan Helsley, acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals before the trade deadline, has a 10.38 ERA in his 10 appearances with the Mets. He has allowed multiple runs in four of those outings and has walked seven batters. The two-time All-Star knows exactly what his problem is – he’s tipping his pitches.
“I’m not trying to sound arrogant or anything, but I feel like my stuff’s too good to get hit around as consistently as it has since I’ve been here,” Helsley said. “We’ve played mostly teams in the hunt, and a lot of teams nowadays will have guys who look specifically for those things. It’s pretty glaring and obvious when I’m doing it… A hundred’s not going to play the same when guys know it’s coming.”
Pitch-tipping has become a major issue in the game, and it’s something that teams and pitchers need to address. However, recognizing the problem is only the first step – it may take some time for Helsley to adjust his routine on the mound. Luckily, he has a month to figure things out before the playoffs begin, assuming the Mets secure their spot.
Helsley started his Mets career on a positive note, with three scoreless outings before allowing an unearned run against the Milwaukee Brewers on Aug. 9. But things quickly went downhill from there. Despite the struggles, Helsley remains confident in his abilities and knows he can turn things around.
“Dude, it’s so frustrating,” he said. “I started out really great – my first three outings were good. The last five, six, seven haven’t been really that good. It’s definitely frustrating, especially being traded for and thinking you’re getting the polar opposite of what I’ve shown. But I know I’m capable of it. I’ve done it a lot in my career. I’m just trying to be that guy.”
The Mets will continue to be patient with Helsley, but with important series against the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals coming up, they will need him to find his form sooner rather than later.
