Jordan Walker’s Offensive Promise Shines as Cardinals Shut Out Cubs at Busch Stadium

ST. LOUIS – After a successful rehab assignment in the minor leagues following the All-Star break, Jordan Walker has been making a big impact for the Cardinals on offense. In the 18 games since his return, Walker has gone 21-of-66 with a .318 average, including at least one hit in 14 of those games.

On Friday night, Walker’s offensive prowess was on full display as he helped lead the Cardinals to a shutout victory over the Cubs at Busch Stadium. The young player hit a long home run and had two singles, giving him his second consecutive three-hit game and driving in two runs.

Walker’s home run in the sixth inning, over the visiting bullpen, was his first in the majors since May 17, breaking a streak of 109 at-bats without a home run. This was all the offense the Cardinals needed as pitcher Michael McGreevy worked six scoreless innings before the bullpen completed the shutout.

Game Breakdown

At the Plate: Walker’s infield single in the second inning drove in the first run for the Cardinals. A sacrifice fly from Ivan Herrera and an RBI single from Willson Contreras increased the lead to 3-0 in the fifth. Walker’s homer, his fourth of the year, came with two outs in the sixth. Thomass Saggese followed with a double and scored on a single by Pedro Pages. Walker added his third hit, a single, in the eighth. Alec Burleson also had a three-hit night.

On the Mound: McGreevy allowed six hits over six innings, stranding seven runners on base. He was hit by a line drive in the chest in the second inning but was able to stay in the game. Matt Svanson, JoJo Romero, and Riley O’Brien combined to allow only one single over the final three innings to secure the victory.

Key Stat: Despite posting a .320 average against the Cubs this season, Willson Contreras’ RBI in this game was his first in 25 at-bats against them.

Worth Noting: This was the third consecutive shutout between the Cubs and Cardinals at Busch Stadium, with the first two being won by the Cubs on June 25-26. Former Cardinal Yadier Molina served as a guest coach for the Cardinals in this game and will do so again on Saturday night.
