A Day of Disappointment for the Padres: Shutout by Cardinals Despite Strong Offense
Just one day after a seven-run offensive outburst, the San Diego Padres were unable to score a single run against the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite out-hitting their opponents 11-5, the Padres fell 3-0 in the second game of their four-game series.
The Padres had high hopes for starting pitcher Nick Pivetta, who has been a standout player for the team this season with double-digit wins. However, his usual success was not enough to secure a win at Busch Stadium on Friday.
Pivetta pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. While these numbers are typical for Pivetta, it was a hit batter in the second inning and back-to-back walks in the fourth that ultimately cost the Padres the game.
The trouble began in the bottom of the second when Willson Contreras was hit by a pitch, causing a heated exchange between him and Pivetta. The benches cleared, but the situation was quickly diffused and the game continued without further incident.
Nolan Arenado then reached base on a fielder’s choice, with Jake Cronenworth being charged with an error on the play. With runners on first and second, Masyn Winn’s sacrifice bunt allowed Contreras and Arenado to advance. Despite getting the ground ball he wanted, Pivetta’s defense was unable to make the play at home, allowing the Cardinals to take a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Pivetta walked Contreras and Arenado, and a wild pitch allowed both runners to advance. Winn then hit a double, bringing in two more runs for the Cardinals and extending their lead to 3-0.
The Padres’ struggles continued on the offensive side as well. In the top of the fourth, Jackson Merrill and Xander Bogaerts were on second and first base, respectively. A fly out from Gavin Sheets allowed Merrill to tag up and advance to third, but Bogaerts’ attempt to advance to second resulted in a double play, leaving Merrill stranded.
Despite out-hitting the Cardinals, the Padres were unable to capitalize on their opportunities and ultimately fell short. The mistakes on defense also carried over to the offensive side, adding to the disappointment of the day for the Padres.
