Can fish oil and aspirin treat severe gum disease as well as antibiotics?
The short answer: In a registered, placebo-controlled trial of 109 people with severe (stage III/IV) periodontitis, a daily combination of 3 grams of omega-3 and 100 mg of aspirin helped 57.7% of patients hit the treatment goal after one year, close to the 58.6% who reached it on antibiotics. Both far outperformed the 23.1% who improved with standard treatment alone. That said, the trial wasn’t designed to formally prove the two are equivalent, only that each beat placebo, so this is a promising early result, not a settled swap for antibiotics.
