Breaking News: Oscar Mercado Released by Philadelphia Just 10 Days Ago

In a shocking turn of events, it has been revealed that Oscar Mercado, the highly-touted outfielder for the Philadelphia Phillies, was released just 10 days ago. This news has sent shockwaves through the baseball community, as Mercado was considered a rising star in the organization.

According to sources close to the team, the decision to release Mercado was made due to his lackluster performance in recent games. Despite high expectations for the young player, he failed to live up to his potential and was ultimately let go by the Phillies.

This news comes as a surprise to many, as Mercado was seen as a key player for the Phillies’ future success. His release has left fans and analysts alike questioning the team’s decision and wondering what the future holds for Mercado.

The 24-year-old outfielder was drafted by the Phillies in 2013 and had been with the organization for six years. He made his major league debut in 2019 and showed promise with his speed and defensive skills. However, his offensive numbers were not up to par, leading to his eventual release.

It is unclear at this time if any other teams have shown interest in signing Mercado, but it is likely that

Phillies Bring Back Former Cardinals Outfielder Oscar Mercado with Minor League Deal

The Philadelphia Phillies have made a move to bolster their outfield depth by re-signing Oscar Mercado, a former St. Louis Cardinals draft pick. According to his profile on MLB.com, Mercado has been signed to a minor league contract today.

This is not the first time the Phillies have brought in Mercado this year, as they also signed him to a minor league deal in February. However, he was released by the organization on August 4th. During his previous stint with the team, Mercado had a solid performance with a .252/.373/.385 slash line, 9 home runs, and 54 RBI in 92 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Despite his brief absence from the team, not much has changed in terms of the Phillies’ outfield rotation. Nick Castellanos, Brandon Marsh, and Max Kepler are set as the starters, with Harrison Bader also in the mix after being acquired in a trade with the Minnesota Twins.

According to Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors, it is unlikely that Mercado will see playing time at the major league level. “He’ll provide them with some non-roster depth, but it could take a few injuries for his services to be required in the majors,” McDonald wrote.

Mercado, who is now 30 years old, was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the second round of the 2013 draft. He spent several years in their farm system before making his MLB debut in 2019 with the Cleveland Indians.

After being released by the Cardinals, Mercado rejoined the team by signing a minor league contract before the 2023 season. He appeared in 20 games that year and had a .290/.313/.387 slash line, but was designated for assignment midway through the season. He has not played in a major league game since then.

The Phillies currently hold the top spot in the NL East with a record of 69-51, 5.0 games ahead of the New York Mets. They are set to begin a four-game series against the Washington Nationals tonight.
