Padres Extend Winning Streak to Six Games with 4-1 Victory over Cardinals

SAN DIEGO (AP) – In a dominant performance, Nick Pivetta led the San Diego Padres to a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. Pivetta allowed just one hit and one run in seven innings, striking out five batters without giving up a walk. The Padres’ offense was led by Jackson Merrill, who drove in two runs, as they extended their winning streak to six games.

The only blemish for Pivetta was a solo home run by Willson Contreras in the fifth inning, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. However, the Padres quickly responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of two errors by the Cardinals that led to three unearned runs.

With Jake Cronenworth on first base and one out, Jose Iglesias hit a slow grounder to third baseman Nolan Gorman. Gorman’s wide throw to first baseman Contreras skipped away, allowing Cronenworth to advance to third and eventually score on another throwing error by Contreras. Elias Díaz then singled in Iglesias, and Merrill drove in two more runs with a two-out single against Cardinals pitcher Matt Svanson.

The Padres’ bullpen held strong, with Robert Suarez recording his major league-leading 31st save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore (6-9) pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and four runs (one earned).

The key moment of the game came in the eighth inning when Padres reliever Mason Miller, acquired at the trade deadline from the Athletics, made his first appearance with San Diego. The sold-out crowd at Petco Park gave Miller a roaring applause as he trotted in from the bullpen. With one out and runners at the corners, Miller induced a ground ball double play from Yohel Pozo to escape the inning unscathed.

The Cardinals have now lost five of their last six games, scoring a combined four runs in those losses.

In the second game of the series on Saturday night, the Cardinals will send Michael McGreevy (2-2, 4.91 ERA) to the mound to face off against the Padres’ Randy Vásquez (3-4, 3.65 ERA).
